Feedback 27.1.11

Alex, good to see you completed the homework posts. Please now ensure that you upload your prelim tasks both the front page and svcan in the sketch of contents page (Nikki or Mike can scan it for you if you ask them). Then you should analyse a real front pg, contents and feature. Also, please ensure that you book your workshop time for next week.

Initial ideas

My initial ideas for my magazine are that it will contain an attractive bold large title at the top of the page. Then a large image creating direct address, with straplines underneathe aswell as other teaser articles based around. It will be based mainly at a young generation between the ages of 14-22 but the older generation could also be interested in some of the older bands being published. It will be similar to NME and Kerrang!. the colours will be quite plain and simple but this will appeal to my target audience.

Conventions of magazines

All magazines follow the same rules whether they are a lifestlye, fashion, computer or music magazines. they can be released on a monthly basis or weekly. All these magazines will pin point their target audience. they will design their magazine based on this including fonts, colours, pictures and the name of the magazine. Mode of address is very important within magazines as it gives off a relationship with the audience. the most common mode of address is direct address which is when the main cover picture is looking straight out at the audience to make it feel more inviting for the consumer. However some producers can use indirect address, this is when the person is looking away, this is not that common in magazines but it has been used.
Most magazines will include well known celebrities on their front cover to wider the audience and to make more appealing. the front cover is the main selling point for the magazine as it is what the customer will see first. it is important to have a well stood out magazine that will catch the eye of the customers in the shop. Certain colours and fonts will determine the genre of the magazine and the audience knows this as this has been used over many years,  this makes it easier to find the right magazine for them.
magazines usually follow the layout of having the title of the magazine at the top in big bold lettering to show clearly the name of the product and to be recognisable to the audience. They then have a large main picture of a well known celebrity to become eyecatching and then subheadings, straplines and small taster articles around the page.
It will contain a barcode with the price of the magazine, usually cheaper for a weekly mag and more expensive for a monthly magazine.

Contents pages should be made to attract the customer as they may have a cheeky flick through before they buy the magazine. It should include some bold headings of popular subjects that the audience will want to read about. The contents will contain a feature article that will have a picture around it which will attract the customers. The main point of the contents is too show the customer whats inside the magazine so it has to be interesting enough to buy.

Feature articles are usually double spread pages in a magazine. It will most likely contain a large image and the smaller images around the page. This should contain lots of writing but made in an interesting mannor rather than plain and boring.
