Circulation figures

I have researched circulation figures of magazines based around my genre. I have found that magazines such as NME and KERRANG! have decreased. This is a problem as my magazine will be very much like these magazines. However i can make my magazine different and unique to the rest of these magazines and increase the sales in the market.

Calendar

I will create a calendar to organise my time well so i am on time with all my production:

8th - 11th February                 - finish all planning
11th 15th February                 - Finish all mock ups
16th - 18th February               - photo shoots

Reader profile

The readers of my magazine will be mostly male and in the teenage age range. They will be in to their indie music and know what to expect from the indie magazines. They will have their own disposable income to spend on the weekly magazine which will be cheaper. As it is weekly this will keep them more occupied in buying the magazines each week and reading about their favourite bands and artists. They will know all the latest indie fashion styles and all the information about gigs and albums. There will be set advertisements to appeal to the reader and the language that will be in my magazine may contain some strong language but they will be expecting this from my magazine.

Planned photo shoots

For my music magazine i will capture the images of 4 male teenagers with the indie look. This will be appealing to my audience and i feel this will work well. I have researched many band images to work off that will work well with my photos. I will take group pictures and single pictures to be set in my magazine. I will use props just as guitars to make the image look more realistic for the audience. They will be wearing the conventional indie clothing which is what my target audience will also wear.

This photo taken of the Libertines is the type of photo that i will like to capture for my magazine. This is a very indie based picture as they all look quite dirty and rough but that is the type of image that will attract my audience. Also some members do not have to be looking straight on at the camera, this still appeals to the audience.

Moodboard

This moodboard that i have created represents well what my magazine will contain. It is based around the rock and roll indie theme. The different fonts that i have landed on for the magazine are each suited to the name Supersonic. From looking at this you can see that it is based at a male teenage audience.

Name of magazine

To help me come to my conclusion on the name of my magazine i have created a questionnaire in which i have asked 10 people in the same age range of my target audience.
the names that i have chosen are as follows:

- Rockstar
- Cigarettes & Alcohol
- Supersonic

1. Are you male or female?
male -  7
female - 3

2. How old are you?
16 - 3
17 - 5
18 - 2

3. Which name of magazine do you prefer?
Rockstar - 4
Cigarettes & Alcohol - 1
Supersonic - 5

following the results of my questionnaire i have come to the conclusion that i will call my magazine SUPERSONIC. This name will appeal to my audience as it sounds lively and exciting.

Equipment/technologies to be used

Throughout this project i will use a range of technology and equipment for the best product possible. To capture my pictures i will use a camera and use different affects with it experimenting with different tones. i will capture these pictures either in my area of choice or i can use the studio to use their facilities in which i can take professional photos with their lighting effects. After i have successfully captured all the pictures that i wish to use i will upload them on to the apple mac computers. Whilst using these computers i will use a range of different software to create my magazine. I will use photoshop to edit my picture to my specification and the upload this to InDesign in which is will create my magazine.

Conventions of music magazines

This front cover is taken from the magazine NME. This is the type of front cover that i would like for my music magazine. This is set out in a conventional manner to other magazines.
Firstly the magazine has a large bold title to show clearly what the name of that magazine is for the customers. The title is usually catchy so people will remember it.
Then like every magazine is has a main feature picture which takes up a large amount of the page. This picture is showing direct address to the customers, this is something that i will include in my magazine. To follow on from the feature picture is a title stating the name of the band/musician. Underneath the title their will be a teaser strap line giving information about the feature article. This should have a positive response from audiences as they will know what the interview is about.
around the front page will be little boxes containing different information. Some of them will be about prizes and others about sections within the magazine to invite you in.

The double page feature has to look attractive and appealing enough so that you will read it. It will contain 1 or 2 pictures a main heading, a teaser title and the main article.
They will have the main large image taking up a large amount of the page to get your attention straight away and make you want to read on. They may have another smaller picture around the page to keep your attention and to make it look attractive. The main title should also grab your attention and give you a brief idea of what the article is about. The second title will give a short quote usually from the article to make it seem more interesting for the audience. And then the actual article will be set out in straight collums depending on the target audience and easy for the audience to understand.

The contents page will contain a lot of information so it is important that it looks attractive and well aet out.

It will contain a main picture that shows the main article or something interesting in the magazine. underneath the picture they will contain a brief write up about what this picture is about in the magazine.
They will then have bold titiles showing what will be including within the magazine to make you read on.
They may also include phone numbers for the company so that you can subscribe to and also prizes or free give aways at the bottom of the page.

Journalistic style of an article

This article that i have chosen is a very simple styled one. However is is simple an yet attractive for the audience. They have decided to use a large picture taking up on side of the double page spread which will catch the attention and draw the reader in, this is conventional in many music magazines. The picture they have chosen is perfectly set to their generic conventions. The audience of this magazine will not be appealed by lots of colours and pictures, they will enjoy a simple page with a main picture that draws them in and a smaller image surrounding it.
The text is set out in a simple straight columned way in which it is simple to read for the audience. The article will usually contain a quote from the interview or write up that will intise people in to reading it to find out when the rest of it will say. It will also have a fairly large heading of the article telling you what it is about.

media theory to discuss target audience

My music magazine will be mainly set out to target a male teenage audience. They will be attracted to the magazine with the influence of the music and the female models aspect as well. As they are teenagers they will have disposable income to spend how they please, so the magazine will be reasonably cheap for them to buy. Even though it is based mainly at teenage males other audiences can be attracted to from the music aspects, female teenagers will also be interested in some of the bands that will be in the magazine and also the older generation as the magazine will also contain some bands from their era to keep the audience base widened.

top 40

After analysing the top 40 downloads i can now get a clear perspective on the certain music genre that is the most popular in the UK. The genre of music that is going to be contained in my magazine is not in this list, but my audience will not be in to pop music and look for the charts. They will know all the bands from television and from their friends. This will not really affect my magazine as this is not my audience and mine is the more indie scene.

contents page

This is my rough design for my contents page. It is a basic structure containing many pictures with bold headings for articles and any other information my magazine will contain.

Band Image

This album cover is well suited for my specific audience. As my audience is prominently based at teenage males they will find this attractive for them. They will be in to the simple laid back feel with a ciggarette in his hand looking rock and roll which is the message i want to get across for my magazine.

This is another example of an album cover that will be aimed at my teenage audience as they will like the whole messy aspect and being a stereotypical rebelious teen. The instruments are very important on this image as it still gets across the music aspect.

This band picture of Arctic Monkeys is simple yet attractive for my audience. The clothing that they are wearing will appeal to my young audience and it looks genuine, as the audience can relate to this image well.

Institutions

Following some extensive research i have decided that IPC will be the best choice to produce and distribute my magazine. I have come to this conclusion because they already produce NME and NUTS which are two magazines which will appeal to my audience. ICP produce many magazines ranging from monthly and weekly magazines with a varied price choice. As NME is the only music magazine that they actually publish it would be a great opportunity for my magazine to be along side it with its unique twist.

preliminary task

This is my preliminary front cover task. There are many things that I will change about my front cover from this experience. I will make it more professional looking for the audience of my choice by adding a more varied colour palete to stand out. There will be more information and pictures on the cover to show that this is an exciting magazine that people will want to read. As of now it is too boring and plain for any audience, this is something I will improve with different programmes such as Photoshop and Indesign.

USP

my magazine will contain a unique selling point as it will be different to conventional magazines. It will be a music magainze but with a more male based audience as it will also contain girls. I will take conventions from NME and Kerrang! and mix them up abit with Nuts and Zoo. This will target my audience perfectley as the male audience will be based on the classic and updated indie music with something extra for them.

preliminary task analysis

Preliminary task

I am relatively pleased with the outcome of my preliminary task. I feel that in some aspects it could have been a lot more advanced. Firstly I think that the name of my magazine could have been stronger. In my official magazine it will be extremely suited to my specific audience and genre of the music. It will be a name that the audience will relate to and become catchy and grab their attention.
With the programmes I used such as InDesign and Photoshop I will use these to my advantages in the future and make the cutout and other pictures to look professional.
Around my magazine should be filled in with straplines and teaser articles to make it look like a real magazine and something that you would want to buy.
The colours of my magazine will be changed to match up to my target audience. It will be set to the usual conventional colours of an indie type magazine with red and black colours. I feel that grabbing the audiences attention is the main concept. It should be big bold and eye catching and then the right price so that they will buy it.

Feedback 27.1.11

Alex, good to see you completed the homework posts. Please now ensure that you upload your prelim tasks both the front page and svcan in the sketch of contents page (Nikki or Mike can scan it for you if you ask them). Then you should analyse a real front pg, contents and feature. Also, please ensure that you book your workshop time for next week.

Initial ideas

My initial ideas for my magazine are that it will contain an attractive bold large title at the top of the page. Then a large image creating direct address, with straplines underneathe aswell as other teaser articles based around. It will be based mainly at a young generation between the ages of 14-22 but the older generation could also be interested in some of the older bands being published. It will be similar to NME and Kerrang!. the colours will be quite plain and simple but this will appeal to my target audience.

Conventions of magazines

All magazines follow the same rules whether they are a lifestlye, fashion, computer or music magazines. they can be released on a monthly basis or weekly. All these magazines will pin point their target audience. they will design their magazine based on this including fonts, colours, pictures and the name of the magazine. Mode of address is very important within magazines as it gives off a relationship with the audience. the most common mode of address is direct address which is when the main cover picture is looking straight out at the audience to make it feel more inviting for the consumer. However some producers can use indirect address, this is when the person is looking away, this is not that common in magazines but it has been used.
Most magazines will include well known celebrities on their front cover to wider the audience and to make more appealing. the front cover is the main selling point for the magazine as it is what the customer will see first. it is important to have a well stood out magazine that will catch the eye of the customers in the shop. Certain colours and fonts will determine the genre of the magazine and the audience knows this as this has been used over many years,  this makes it easier to find the right magazine for them.
magazines usually follow the layout of having the title of the magazine at the top in big bold lettering to show clearly the name of the product and to be recognisable to the audience. They then have a large main picture of a well known celebrity to become eyecatching and then subheadings, straplines and small taster articles around the page.
It will contain a barcode with the price of the magazine, usually cheaper for a weekly mag and more expensive for a monthly magazine.

Contents pages should be made to attract the customer as they may have a cheeky flick through before they buy the magazine. It should include some bold headings of popular subjects that the audience will want to read about. The contents will contain a feature article that will have a picture around it which will attract the customers. The main point of the contents is too show the customer whats inside the magazine so it has to be interesting enough to buy.

Feature articles are usually double spread pages in a magazine. It will most likely contain a large image and the smaller images around the page. This should contain lots of writing but made in an interesting mannor rather than plain and boring.
